What is Aldara

Genital warts, also called genital warts, are small, red, rooster-like growths that appear around the genitals. They result from the contraction of a virus: the human papillomavirus (HPV). The latter is transmitted through physical contact with affected areas and especially through sexual intercourse. Although this infection is not the best known STI, it does affect a number of people. It is estimated that several thousand people in France are affected each year by genital warts.
In many cases, transmission of HPV is asymptomatic and manifests itself in the appearance of genital warts after a certain incubation period. Since genital warts are spread through physical contact, it is essential to avoid sexual intercourse during the period of infection and to start appropriate treatment as quickly as possible.
Aldara cream is particularly recommended for persistent cases of genital warts, when previously used drugs have not worked. Imiquimod works to stimulate the immune system by facilitating the release of certain proteins called cytokines. These proteins block the growth of virus cells, which helps stop their spread and promote their disappearance. The drug does not completely destroy the virus but heals the affected areas.

The active component in Aldara is a substance called imiquimod. It was put on the market from 1997 and belongs to the category of immunomodulatory drugs. This medicine treats genital warts in a slightly different way than other antivirals, which is why this medicine is generally prescribed for cases of resistant genital warts.
Imiquimod fuses with certain skin cells responsible for immunity and triggers the release of alpha interferon, a type of protein called a cytokine. The latter provides the immune cells of the skin with the elements necessary to destroy the contaminated cells. As a result, the cells of the virus are destroyed and replaced with healthy cells.
Topical cream does not completely destroy HPV, however its action visibly reduces symptoms.
